PLASTICS RECYCLING
GOOD NEWS

You can now, once again, recycle hard, rigid plastics at Hills Recycling, Canal Road, Trowbridge.  This means things such as toys, garden furniture, buckets, plant pots, etc.

GREEN STREETS – GREAT PROGRESS

British Gas has now completed insulation work at Fitzmaurice and Holt primary schools, the United Church Hall, the Lambert Community Centre and Holt Village Hall. Further work to improve the efficiency of the lighting at the United Church hall, Holt Village Hall and Holt Primary School will be carried out soon. A total of £16,000 will be spent on making the five buildings more energy efficient, with a long-term reduction in carbon emissions as well as cost savings.

STOP PRESS: Christ Church Primary School now has a photovoltaics array on their hall roof, match funded by Green Streets.  Today (Friday 26th November) the system was connected up and within 2 hours was generating sufficient electricity to run 5 classrooms!  Brilliant.  Photos to follow.

Participants in the Green Streets project met on Saturday 30^th October to collect all sorts of energy saving equipment, from low energy lightbulbs and reflective radiator panels to eco kettles and energy monitors. The equipment was provided free by British Gas to over 100 households participating in the programme. A British Gas energy advisor was on hand to answer questions and demonstrate how to fit equipment.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The annual general meeting was held at the West Barn, Bradford on Avon on Monday, August 16th, Chairman, Richard Craft welcomed the 27 members present and the first item on the agenda was to approve the modified terms of reference (to read please click here CFB TOR) The modifications were accepted unanimously by the group, proposed by Martin Evans and seconded by Jane Laurie. The election of officers followed – Richard Craft was re-elected as chairman, propsed by Jerry Smith and seconded by Isabelle Martindale, Rowena Quantrill was elected deputy chair, proposed by Carol Craft and seconded by Ruth Walton and Maureen Wood was elected treasurer, proposed by Martin Evans and seconded by Mike Andrews. These three officers were authorised by the meeting to sign cheques or make payments on behalf of the group. The treasurer’s report was then given and accepted by the meeting, proposed by Jerry Smith and seconded by Joyce Hitchcock. Martin Evans then spoke about the Community Interest Company – Low Carbon Bradford (see below)  and Richard Craft  gave a report on past and future activities of the group. We were then much entertained by the ‘Transition Tales’ of Steph Bradley. Below is a photo taken at the AGM of Steph with CFB members  and the gifts she brought to us from towns on her route and those she is taking from B o A to towns she will be visiting.

COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY

The Low Carbon Bradford on Avon Community Interest Company: membership and November workshop

The Low Carbon Bradford on Avon Community Interest Company (CIC) was set up by Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon to develop and manage large-scale projects which require a formal legal structure and more ambitious funding. The CIC has taken the lead in delivering the British Gas Green Streets programme, as well as developing other projects. The majority of CIC members are required to be elected from CFB supporters, and the 5 founder members are keen for others to join them in taking this forward. We are holding a workshop in November to develop future plans and allow potential members to get to know us better, as well as agree how CFB and the CIC can best work together.

ENERGY SAVING MONITORS ON FREE LOAN
FROM THE TOWN LIBRARY

You can now borrow an energy saving monitor from the library for 3 weeks.  These are excellent gadgets for seeing just how much electricity you use, what it costs you and, by being more careful with your electricity use  you can check the savings you make.  You just need to be a member of the library to borrow one.

The Tourist Information Centre, who are signed up to our Carbon Neutral 2050 campaign, have just installed a similar one to monitor their electricity and it will be interesting to see the results of this.

CFB SCOOPS TOP PRIZE!!!

At the British Gas Green Streets regional final CFB won around £150,000′s worth of energy efficiency measures to be used in homes, schools and public buildings in the town and local area.  We were up against very tough opposition so this is a fantastic achievement for our group and a measure of the dedication, hard work and commitment that goes into what we are doing and in particular the energy group ably led by Jane Laurie.

About Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon

Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon is an active local community group, whose goal is to make Bradford on Avon a greener, more sustainable place to live.The group was founded in May 2006, as part of a Wiltshire Wildlife Trust initiative, and we now have around 400 members and supporters.  Our activities are very wide-ranging, making the most of every opportunity to raise awareness and encourage people to take practical action. We organise our own events, such as an eco-trade fair, plastic bag amnesty,  climate change quiz, and Open House Day, as well as providing a stand or talks at other people’s events.  There’s a chance for everyone to get involved, with family cycle rides and welly walks, tree planting and activities as part of the town arts festival. We also aim to influence policy, whether through input into planning decisions or organisations of panel debates with MPs and MEPs.We work with other groups and organisations in the area, such as the Town Council, Parish Councils, the Chamber of Commerce, the Preservation Trust, Bath University and the Community Area Partnership. We also belong to the national Stop Climate Chaos Coalition and the Low Carbon Communities Network. We are grateful for funding and support from the Town Council, West Wilts District Council, the Co-Operative Group and the National Lottery Awards for All. This year we were a runner up in the South West Carbon Positive Community Awards.Our priorities are to:

• reduce energy use in homes and business and promote renewable energy
• reduce the waste that we produce as a community
• reduce the impact of transport in the community

by changing our own lifestyles,and helping others, from friends and family to national government, to change, too.
